Guide and Scout Camping

We can offer Members of Guide, Scout and D of E groups the use of our orchard for pitching of tents. The area is private and exclusive and we only accept one group at a time.

The pitching area is large, and a typical configuration might be 4 or 5 patrol tents, a cooking shelter and a small marquee.

The area is level and part shaded by ash trees and mature fruit trees. The site is a safe space being behind locked gates and surrounded by dense, mature hedgerows.

There is a small private washroom with 2 toilets with washbasin and 1 shower. Hot water is provided and there is also a dedicated washing up area more than capable of dealing with mucky billy cans etc.

Fresh water and waste facilities also available in this area.

A further toilet and shower are available in an adjacent barn for mixed and larger groups.

Camp fires are possible but only with the owner’s prior consent (which may be denied in the height of a dry summer for obvious reasons!) We can help with the setup of altar fires, and a camp fire circle. A play area for ball games can be made available in an adjacent field.

Parking is available for leader’s vehicles on site, and we can accommodate parent’s vehicles when dropping off their children. There is no vehicle access to the pitching area, but we can provide carts to assist with the movement of equipment. We are happy to load up our tractor and trailer to help larger groups.

The site is adjacent to a woodland nature reserve, and this can be reached within 2 minutes by leaving the site through a pedestrian gate and following the public footpath.

The local information page provides more information about things to see and do in the area.

THINGS TO NOTE

The site is frequented by wildlife, deer, moles and rabbits. In the orchard there will be fallen fruit in the autumn. The ground may be uneven in some areas.

There is an unfenced pond on the site, but some distance from the camping area. Ducks, moorhens and a heron are regular visitors.

Unfortunately the condition of the ground and the lack of appropriate modifications in the washroom make Longlands unsuitable for those with mobility issues.

On a clear night there is little light pollution, and star gazing is a firm favourite at Longlands.
